Wednesday Vrat Katha
In the city of Samatapur, there lived a wealthy man named Madhusudan. He was married to a beautiful young woman named Sangeeta, who belonged to Balrampur.
Once, Madhusudan went to Balrampur on a Wednesday to bring his wife back to their home. He asked Sangeeta’s parents to send her with him. They said, “Son, today is Wednesday. One should not undertake a journey for an auspicious purpose on Wednesday. Do not take Sangeeta today.”
However, Madhusudan did not listen to them. He said that he did not believe in such beliefs about auspicious and inauspicious days. He took his wife with him, and they began their journey to Samatapur in a bullock cart.
After travelling some distance, one of the wheels of their bullock cart broke. The cart could not go any farther, so they continued their journey on foot. After walking for some time, Sangeeta became very thirsty. Madhusudan seated her under a tree and went to fetch some water for her.
When Madhusudan returned with water a little later, he was astonished to see another man sitting beside Sangeeta who looked exactly like him and was dressed just like him. Sangeeta was equally bewildered. She could not tell which of the two men was her real husband.
Madhusudan asked the man, “Who are you, and why are you sitting beside my wife?” The man replied, “What do you mean? This is my wife, Sangeeta. I have brought my wife back from her parents’ home. But who are you to question me?”
Madhusudan said, “You must be a thief or an impostor. This is my wife, Sangeeta. I left her sitting here under this tree while I went to fetch water.” The other man replied, “You are the one who is lying. When Sangeeta became thirsty, I went to fetch water and gave it to my wife. Now leave this place, or I will call the soldiers and have you arrested.”
The two men began arguing with each other. Seeing them quarrel, many people gathered there. Some soldiers also arrived and took both men before the king.
The king listened to both of them, but he too could not determine which one was the real Madhusudan. Sangeeta was also unable to recognize her true husband. The king ordered that both men be imprisoned.
The real Madhusudan became frightened upon hearing this. Just then, a divine voice came from the sky: “Madhusudan! You ignored Sangeeta’s parents and began your journey from your in-laws’ home on Wednesday. All this is happening because of the displeasure of Lord Budh Dev.”
Madhusudan realized his mistake. He prayed to Lord Budh Dev and said, “O Lord Budh Dev, please forgive me. I have committed a great mistake. From now on, I will never undertake a journey on Wednesday, and I will faithfully observe the Wednesday fast.”
Pleased with Madhusudan’s sincere prayer, Lord Budh Dev forgave him.
At that very moment, the second man suddenly disappeared in front of the king. Everyone present was astonished to witness this miracle. By the grace of Lord Budh Dev, the king respectfully sent Madhusudan and his wife Sangeeta on their way.
After travelling some distance, they found their bullock cart. Its broken wheel had also been repaired. They happily sat in the cart and continued their journey towards Samatapur.
Thereafter, Madhusudan and Sangeeta began observing the Wednesday fast and worshipping Lord Budh Dev with devotion. By the grace of Lord Budh Dev, their lives remained filled with happiness, peace and prosperity.
Thus, it is believed that those who faithfully observe the Wednesday Vrat according to the prescribed tradition and listen to the Wednesday Vrat Katha with devotion receive the blessings of Lord Budh Dev, who removes their difficulties and brings happiness and prosperity into their lives.
